Employee Highlight: Jeanne Bruce

By Emily Zalla

WHAT IS YOUR POSITION HERE AT HYPERQUAKE?

CFO/COO, Owner

WHEN DID YOU START WORKING AT HYPERQUAKE?

Trick question. Steve and I started Bruce Design in 1986, and then we started Hyperquake in 2000. We merged both companies in 2004—so long story short, it has been 30 years in the business!

WHERE WERE YOU BORN AND RAISED?

Born in Chicago, but raised in Cincinnati.

WHAT HOBBIES OR PASSIONS DO YOU HAVE?

I love my vegetable garden. Already planning what I’m going to plant next spring. Quakers are the benefactors with frequent batches of homemade salsa 🙂 Also passionate about my family—and there are a lot of them!

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE BANDS, TV SHOWS, AND MOVIES?

Not much of a music buff (so no worries about me controlling Spotify at the office), so I’ll move right onto TV shows. Right now I’m binge watching House of Cards and love it.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO GET INTO YOUR FIELD OF WORK?

I really have to answer this one as a combo for Steve and myself. He was passionate about design and knew he wanted to work for himself. I had always worked in the field of finance, so our combined skill sets made it a bit easier to take the plunge and quit our jobs to start Bruce Design. Actually, Steve quit his job first, and once things became “legit,” we moved the drawing table and file cabinet out of our family room into our first studio, and I quit to work full time in our business.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE CLIENTS YOU’VE WORKED WITH IN YOUR CAREER AND WHY?

Working with the Cincinnati Reds was one of my favs. They were great partners and the work was inspiring and what could be more fun than working with your local professional sports team!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE EXPERIENCE AT HYPERQUAKE?

My favorite experiences have been the various “moves” we have made over the years. It’s always exciting and a fresh start when we move into new space with a clean slate. That usually translates to an opportunity to evolve our brand 🙂

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE TYPES OF PROJECTS?

While they don’t pay the bills, I find it rewarding for everyone at Hyperquake when we work on projects and with clients that have a direct positive impact on our own community. Our work with the Goering Center, The Cincinnati Archdiocese, Portaluca and the Cincinnati Zoo are a few of our favorites.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

My biggest source of inspiration has always been my family—I’ve been fortunate enough to have had some wonderful role models that have influenced me in how I’ve led my life and it always keeps me grounded.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT?

I’d like to learn to play the piano. I tried to teach myself while the kids were getting lessons, but that never panned out. It’s never too late, right???
