Employee Highlight: Dustin Blankenship

By Emily Zalla

WHAT IS YOUR POSITION HERE AT HYPERQUAKE?

I am a Senior Designer and I do other things as well.

WHEN DID YOU START WORKING AT HYPERQUAKE?

At the very end of August in 2010. A little over six years (high five).

WHERE WERE YOU BORN AND RAISED?

I was born in Cincinnati and raised in (at the time) a cornfield. Today, that cornfield looks like your typical subdivision. Don’t be fooled. The subdivisions are not what they seem.

WHAT HOBBIES OR PASSIONS DO YOU HAVE?

I love being outside and going camping, hiking, being on the water. Driving long distances in a car brings me joy. I love music, both listening and watching. Driving to see a show in a city I’ve never been to, camping over night, and hitting a record store on the way out is the perfect trip.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE BANDS, T.V. SHOWS, AND MOVIES?

Modest Mouse is my favorite band. There are others of course, but they never get old for me. I will start from the very beginning of season one and quote the entire F.R.I.E.N.D.S series to you, right now. My favorite movie is True Romance because I love when bodies are left in pools of blood in the name of love. It has been said that you should stop in the name of love. I say, go.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO GET INTO YOUR FIELD OF WORK?

I always thought I wanted to be an architect. It is what my grandpa did and I thought he was cool and his office was cool and his t-square was cool. I wanted to be cool so I went to the University of Cincinnati for architecture. For a year. Then hopped over to the school of design when I learned what that was. I just remember seeing a lot of color and when I woke up, it was a Tuesday. So I went and started the transfer process.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE CLIENTS YOU’VE WORKED WITH IN YOUR CAREER AND WHY?

I like working with clients that are new to the Hyperquake process. There are so many industries that can be greatly impacted by what we do here. Those are usually the most fun to work with. The Cincinnati airport has been a very rewarding client and they are an absolute pleasure.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE EXPERIENCE AT HYPERQUAKE?

All of the people that I have met in my time here. Every one of them has impacted me in one way or another, either professionally or personally. I get into new things all of the time and it’s all because of this place.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE TYPES OF PROJECTS?

When I get to do something I’ve never done before. Partnering with other people around town is usually a good experience. Getting a glimpse into someone else’s world. Plus, you know the work is going to be that much better becasue they are really good at what they do.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

My co-workers (which seems like such a harsh term). The folks around here are much more than that. My family of course. I don’t know. Nouns. Tote bags.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT?

The human brain and Black Sabbath.
