Employee Highlight: Andria Mierzwiak

By Emily Zalla

WHAT IS YOUR POSITION HERE AT HYPERQUAKE?

I am a designer.

WHEN DID YOU START WORKING AT HYPERQUAKE?

In January of 2015 I was hired as a co-op, and worked back and forth as an intern and freelancer until this July, when I was hired as a full-time designer. (Wahoo!)

WHERE WERE YOU BORN AND RAISED?

I was born and raised in good ol’ Toledo, Ohio. The Glass City. Home of Rudy’s Hotdogs, Tony Packo’s, and Sofo’s pizza sauce.

WHAT HOBBIES OR PASSIONS DO YOU HAVE?

I’m really passionate about the earth and the things that inhabit it. I’m a serious animal and ocean lover, and when I have the opportunity these are my favorite things to photograph. I also love experiencing new places and taking mini-adventures, near or far.

And can we count food as a hobby? Because, food. All day.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE BANDS, TV SHOWS, AND MOVIES?

I don’t really have a favorite any one of these things. As far as music goes, I like things across the spectrum. I enjoy anything from Kanye to Ryan Adams to Leon Bridges to Frank Sinatra. New Girl is probably my favorite TV show; but I’m currently so emotionally invested in Lost that if I’m not preoccupied by anything, I find myself trying to figure out the whole (SPOILER ALERT) time travel ordeal and what’s up with it.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO GET INTO YOUR FIELD OF WORK?

When I was a sophomore in high school, my brother recommended that I take the CGD (computer graphic design) course as an elective. And the teacher was so cool and the course was so interesting to me, that I took it every year until I graduated high school. Then I came down to UC to study graphic design and the rest is history. So, shout out to Mr. B for jumpstarting my career.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE CLIENTS YOU’VE WORKED WITH IN YOUR CAREER AND WHY?

I’m still pretty new, so I love being able to learn something from each and every one that I work with. I’ve found, though, that clients who are openminded and willing to be part of the process make the work really gratifying.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE EXPERIENCE AT HYPERQUAKE?

Even though Hyperquake introduced me to Pho Lang Thang, Wig Parties, and Zombie Breakout Rooms, which could all be considered wonderful things, my favorite experience is coming to work with such an intelligent, talented, down-to-earth group of people.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE TYPES OF PROJECTS?

I really love exploring different types of work. I know this is a very generic answer, but the beauty of working here is the exposure to so many different types of problems with different types of solutions. If I have to be specific though, working with data and information and exploring different ways to present it has always been something that I find exciting and interesting.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

There are two things that come to mine. One is the amazing talent that is in this office. Every single person here has taught and inspired me in one way or another. The second is nature, which has an amazing way of putting beauty and rationale in even the smallest of places.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT?

Oh gosh. Everything. I seriously just ran through a list of at least 30 things in my mind. There are so many ways that designers impact the world and people living on it, and it’s all so fascinatingly intertwined. So, my answer is still everything.
